Poltava hotels

After successful completion of negotiations Tsar Peter I arrived to his headquarters deployed in the hamlet Krytoi Bereg on the left bank of Vorskla river.

On day after the battle Peter I issued an order to build two churches in the name of St. Sampsoniy, whose name-day is celebrated on the 27th of June – the day of the battle. One of these churches was erected in St. Petersburg and another one was supposed to be built in Poltava.

When the battle opened, Charles had about 14,000 men, while Peter commanded about 45,000. The Commandant of fortress Kelin had lodged there during the siege of Poltava, in the same house «about three rooms with a kitchen and a bath-house» Peter I rested after the Poltava battle the following day.

In May 1701 a Swedish force of seven ships, armed with a total of 127 cannon, left Sweden and proceeded toward the White Sea. Under the command of Commodore Karl Lewe, the flotilla had orders to occupy and destroy the port of Arkhangelsk, thus preventing Peter from receiving shipments of supplies or armaments from Europe [...]

In 1999 year a large lot of photos taken on the Poltava battlefield were found in the War Archives in Stockholm. Later it was learned that these photos were taken by two Swedish officers: Karl Bennedich and Frey Rydeberg, who visited Poltava in summer 1911. On the day after the battle of Poltava, Peter I ordered the burial of the dead officers and soldiers in two separate graves close to each other. All Russian regiments were drawn up close to the graves to pay their last respect to the fallen warriors. After the service for the dead a big burial [...]
